CBDB: The "Slayers of Joyfunk"

Hailing from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, CBDB is a progressive rock band that describes itself as the “slayers of joyfunk”. Cy Simonton (vocals, guitar), Kris Gotleib (guitar), Josh Rutherford (Bass), Glenn Dillard (Saxophone, Synthesizer), Donald DeLoache (percussion), and Paul Oliver (drums) came together in 2011 to form a sound that has transformed my mundane early morning walks to class into a full on mobile dance party (seriously you should see the looks I get on campus). With their upbeat energy, meandering guitar riffs, and funky bass lines, CBDB’s music is just plain fun to listen to.

Simonton describes CBDB’s “Joyfunk” sound as “the product of a group of players with incredibly diverse influences coming together with the goal of great improvisation and tight live rock shows” and it is hard to argue that they have created exactly what they set out to do. Influenced by the likes of Paul Simon, Umphrey’s McGee, Oukast, The Meters and more, you can hear the passion for music these guys possess as they pay tribute to musical greats past and present and create their unique style. Having shared the stage with artists including Umphrey’s McGee, Blues Traveler, The Revivalists, and Moon Taxi, CBDB has built a stronghold of loyal fans throughout the Southeast and look forward to sharing Joyfunk with music lovers across the country. I for one would kill to see these guys live, and will continue to believe that if everyone had a shot of CBDB’s music with their morning coffee, the world would be a much groovier place.
